There are few places in the Pacific Northwest quite like Hells Canyon. Carved by the Snake River and surrounded by rugged mountains, steep canyon walls and remote wilderness, Hells Canyon is a landscape shaped by millions of years of geological change and thousands of years of human history.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area stretches along the border of Idaho and Oregon, with the Snake River winding through the heart of the canyon.

From the river, visitors experience two distinctly different landscapes. On the Idaho side, steep and rugged slopes rise toward the Seven Devils Mountains. Across the river, the Oregon side features broad grassy hillsides, rocky outcroppings and higher-elevation forests containing Douglas fir and ponderosa pine.

Together, these landscapes create a canyon filled with dramatic geology, abundant wildlife, archaeological sites, historic homesteads and some of the most impressive scenery in the Northwest.
