An entirely different world exists beneath the surface of the Snake River.

The river supports numerous fish species, including smallmouth bass, catfish, rainbow trout, steelhead, Chinook salmon and white sturgeon.

White sturgeon are particularly impressive. They are the largest freshwater fish in North America and have inhabited western rivers for millions of years.

Sturgeon in the Snake River can grow to extraordinary sizes, with exceptionally large fish exceeding 10 feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds.
Their prehistoric appearance, enormous size and long lifespan make them one of the most fascinating animals found in Hells Canyon.

Steelhead and salmon also use the Snake River as part of their remarkable migrations between inland spawning waters and the Pacific Ocean.

Different runs of salmon and steelhead move through the river during different portions of the year, making the Snake River an important part of the region’s fisheries and ecosystem.
