Later generations also left their mark throughout Hells Canyon.

Miners, ranchers, homesteaders, riverboat operators and others attempted to build lives and businesses in one of the Northwest’s most isolated landscapes.

Remnants of old homesteads, mines, trails, cabins and ranches can still be found along the river today. These sites provide another layer to the canyon’s history and offer a glimpse into what life was like for those who attempted to live and work in such rugged country.

For many of these residents, the Snake River wasn’t simply scenery — it was a transportation route and connection to the outside world.

Traveling the river today allows visitors to see many of these locations from the same corridor people have relied upon for generations.
