The Snake River is the centerpiece of Hells Canyon.

The river begins far upstream and travels through several western states before eventually joining the Columbia River in Washington. Through much of Hells Canyon, the Snake forms the boundary between Idaho and Oregon.

The river can change dramatically within a relatively short distance. Calm stretches and deep pools give way to rocky channels and powerful rapids as the river winds through the canyon.

A total of 67.5 miles of the Snake River through Hells Canyon are federally designated as part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
The first 31.5 miles from Hells Canyon Dam to Upper Pittsburg Landing are designated Wild, while the following 36 miles downstream are designated Scenic.

These protections help preserve the remarkable scenery, geology, wildlife, fisheries, cultural resources and recreational opportunities found along the river corridor.
